Inspired by the notion of old Victorian trade cards, I wanted to create a small ‘postcard’ for my dog inspired prints – The Enlightened Hound. They are to be included with each order as a little hand printed reminder of my prints.
Trade cards were the precursor of the modern day business card, used to advertise the type and location of business. They were usually much more elaborate than today’s business cards with detailed illustrations and fancy decorative elements.
I wanted to incorporate some decorative flourishes like banners and scrolls and combine them with my hand drawn letters for a more quirky, modern feel. I wanted to add a simple dog silhouette and make sure both my personal name and company branding were given roughly equal weight.
The idea was that I would print them by hand from a photo polymer plate using left over ink and paper at the end of a print run of my Enlightened Hound prints. This meant that I had to be able to print them in just one colour.
I ended up with 2 designs:
This was such a fun project to do and I’m really happy with how they turned out.
I enjoy branding and logo design work because there are a lot of practical considerations as well as having fun with the design. Each piece of information has to work hard and earn its place, often at a small scale, plus hierarchy of information is crucial. I look forward to including them in with my orders for prints and I hope people will pop them in a drawer as a hand-made reminder of my work.
