Vintage Dog Greeting Cards

Handmade dog breed cards with vintage cigarette cards

As a lover of dogs and all things vintage it was hard to resist these wonderful collectable cigarette cards celebrating dogs. To create the greeting cards, I mounted each one on a coloured card to define it and then mounted this onto a recycled kraft manila card. I used a recycled card to echo the vintage feel of the original cards. I then sourced an envelope in a co-ordinating colour.

This set for John Player, issued in 1931, was created from painting of dogs by Arthur Wardle, an English painter born in 1860 whose paintings of animals, both domestic and wild, are highly sought after. There are 50 breeds in the series.

The second set was created for the Turf brand from tobacco company Carreras in 1952. Frustratingly I haven’t been able to discover the name of the artist who drew the dogs for the 50 Famous Dog Breeds series in their distinctive blue pen & ink style.

The 12 Dogs of Christmas Card

I have been meaning to do a Christmas card for ages and then I usually leave it too late… but this year I’ve managed to get organised and have been busy illustrating and lettering to create ‘The 12 Dogs of Christmas”

12 dogs of christmas

It is a doggy twist on the cumulative song ‘The 12 days of Christmas’, dating from 1780!

I have been reading lots of heart breaking stories on social media recently about unwanted and neglected dogs and the wonderful work so many people do to help them – from the large well known charities to devoted people who work many hours on a shoestring to rescue these poor animals.

So I am donating half the profits from the sale of these cards to a worthy doggy cause. I have asked my newsletter subscribers and Facebook followers for any recommendations of people or companies who make an outstanding contribution to dog rescue… please feel free to comment with any suggestions on this post too. I will post an update after Christmas on where the donation has gone.

Craft Fair Highlights

Well where did the summer go! I can’t believe my last post was in April, however I have had rather a lot on my plate over the last few months, mainly moving house, managing a loft extension and setting up a new studio, so printing has taken rather a back seat these last few months.

Now however I am chomping at the bit to get printing again, but first I’d thought I’d share some pictures of my first craft fair experience at the end of May at the Milton Keynes Handmade and Vintage Fair.

Here is how my stall looked on the day…

Enlightened Hound Stall

The main difficulty was working out how to display my prints unframed. I wanted them to be at eye level and I like the informality of how they look when they are pegged up to dry after printing, so I tried to recapture that with some easels I knocked up (actually painstakingly made with the help of my dad!) with some reclaimed wood from my loft extension.

My greeting cards were displayed in big square chunks of wood with a slot cut into the top for the card to sit in.

I also accessorised the stand with a few adorable soft dogs form the wonderful Jellycat range. I was pleased with how it looked after all the hours of preparation.

It was a very early start to get the stall set up. It was in the atrium of a huge shopping centre which was bright and airy however it turned out to be the first really hot weekend of the year (after weeks of persistent rain) so attendance was not as good as previous events. Despite this my stand attracted lots of dog lovers and I hugely enjoyed hearing all their wonderful stories, from the banana eating Labrador to the German Shepherd who knew when his owner had been in a car crash even though they were miles apart at the time. The quirkiness and loyalty of dogs never ceases to delight and amaze me.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and chatted and to those who bought my cards and prints. Many were bought as gifts for for dog owning friends and family and I hope the recipients were equally delighted.

The Enlightened Hound Greeting Cards

My Enlightened Hound prints will shortly be available to all as greeting cards! There are a total of 8 designs in all – the four existing prints plus four more (for which I have not yet cut the lino plates for posters). They are printed by the Almanac Gallery and were launched at the recent Spring Trade Fair in Birmingham.

Canine Wisdom Cards

Featuring the same distressed type as the original prints, the cards are printed on high quality, matt, 275gsm FSC accredited board. Each card measures 127 x 177mm and comes with a sunny yellow envelope in its own cellophane bag. They are blank inside for your own message… perfect for dog lovers!
